About Rani

My name is Rani Derasary (Rah-nee Der-us-uh-ree), and I’m running for Moab City Council. My name comes from India, where my father was born. He met my mother, who’s from the Netherlands, on a bus in Texas. They married and eventually moved to California where I was born. I attended public schools, earning an undergraduate degree from the University of California Davis. In 1999 I came to Moab for a season and like so many others who’ve done the same, I never left! My husband Nate and I live downtown in a home we own, and share with one dog. I’m lucky to have my sister Lara living in Moab as well.

Like so many people here, I like to spend a lot of my time outdoors. I love the water and dirt, so on any given occasion you may find me hiking, swimming, running rivers, gardening, or becoming increasingly near-sighted nosing up to some creature or plant attempting to render its likeness in a watercolor painting. Other passions include cooking meals with friends over good conversation and making bizarre yard art only a mother could love. (Thanks mom!)

A lot of friends ask you if you’re nuts when you run for public office. Even more ask it if you decide to run for a second term, as I’m doing now. I imagine I’m as crazy as the average American, but all joking aside, I’ve always been a strong believer in the value of public service. I think each of us has the power to make our community a better place, whether it’s through paid employment, employing others, volunteering, providing services, sharing skills/knowledge/talents/creativity, or simply by being kind to others.

In the 19 years I’ve lived in Moab I’ve contributed to the community in various ways: through my past 3.5 years on the Council (see Accomplishments page); revegetation work; sampling water sources in Grand and San Juan Counties; doing office work for local businesses; developing new services such as bi-annual electronic waste collection and increased paper recycling through Canyonlands Community Recycling; serving on the WabiSabi board of directors; and volunteering for groups including Grand County Hospice, Arches National Park and Splore. I currently do administrative work for Moab artist Serena Supplee.  I view running for re-election to City Council as another opportunity to serve the community I call home and the residents who are my friends and neighbors.
